Nanashi, a ronin haunted by his past, has sworn to keep his sword sheathed. After a chance encounter with the young boy Kotaro, Nanashi begins to re-evaluate his life and agrees to protect Kotaro as a hired bodyguard. This decision draws Nanashi into a series of challenges, ultimately leading to his fluid, brutal swordplay and a kinetic duel of attrition against Luo Lang "Rarou," a member of the Ming squad, known as the Ming Dynasty Warriors.
As a child, Nanashi was the only survivor of a shipwreck. He does not remember his original name or birthplace; he only recalls being a foreigner with natural red hair when he washed ashore in Japan. This early trauma shapes his outsider status in later years.
Due to his status as an outsider, Nanashi was used by various Japanese warlords to commit atrocities under their command. As a result, he became a skilled swordsman and feared warrior, acquiring many names, including "Red Demon."
Before becoming a wandering, nameless ronin, Nanashi fought at Shogen Itadori's side under Lord Akaike. At one point, he was ordered to execute two children of a rival lord—a command he could not reconcile. Haunted by their deaths, he left military service and vowed to keep his katana sheathed and bound.
Being scored and treated as an outsider, Nanashi dyes his red hair Black to hide his foreign appearance and avoid prejudices.
Over time, Nanashi becomes attached to Kotaro and comes to view protecting him as a form of repentance for the children he killed in his past. This emotional connection continues his journey toward redemption.
